Bus and traffic how to.

Keeping students safe on their way to and from school is a shared responsibility. It is crucial for every driver to understand the laws regarding school bus red flashing lights and extended stop arms.

Use the guide below to understand your requirements based on different road types:

Two-Lane Roads

Includes roads with or without a center turn lane. If you are traveling on a two-lane road, all traffic from both directions must stop. This law applies even if there is a dedicated center turning lane.

Four-Lane Roads (Without a Median)

On a multi-lane road that does not have a physical barrier or median separation, all traffic from both directions must stop. Do not attempt to pass from the opposite side.

Divided Highways (With a Median)

If there is a physical barrier or an unpaved median separating the lanes of traffic, only traffic following the bus must stop. Vehicles traveling in the opposite direction may proceed with caution, provided they are separated by the median.

Always stay alert, obey the stop arm, and help ensure every child gets to school and back home safely.
