Welcome to the school counseling program at Edgerton Middle School! My name is Ms. Susan Running, and I have been the School Counselor here since 1990. I think we have a great school and wonderful students, and I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather work!
The mission of the Edgerton School District's School Counseling program is to foster the development of confident and capable students within a positive school environment by providing curriculum, individual student planning, responsive services, and system support in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development.
What does that look like, though, on a daily basis? I spend my time helping students in four main ways:
Curriculum - I help students develop awareness and skills by teaching Life Skills once per month per grade level. We learn about things like goal setting, mindfulness, mental health, decision making, harassment & bullying prevention, and career development.
Student planning - New student orientations and transition activities from 5th to 6th grade and 8th to 9th grade are just a few of the ways in which I help students plan for their short-term and long-term futures.
Responsive services - Feeling anxious? Struggling with schoolwork? Having a rough time at home? Not getting along with your friends? I work with students individually and in small groups to help them figure out ways to deal with the problems they are having in their lives.
System support - Besides working directly with students, parents, and school staff, I do things like student scheduling and organizing the state testing program.
